Soulard is a unique community that is located just south of Downtown and east of Lafayette Square. Originally, the area was the home of the workers for the many breweries adjacent to the neighborhood. That included Anheuser-Busch and Falstaff. For the most part, the homes were quite modest although there are many homes built for the managers of the local industries as well as people working in the commercial district in Downtown.
Today, Soulard is the home of the outdoor Soulard market, many restaurants and bars which gives the area a unique flavor that has drawn home owners that are both young and old, wealthy and those of modest means. The architecture of the homes is definitely not suburban. Many homes have been rehabbed but still retain the architecture that is blends in with the historic feeling of the neighborhood.
